Staying Fit/Healthy

Please ignore my insanely cheesy grin
Disclaimer: I am not a professional, I do not have fitness or nutritional training, I'm simply telling you what works for me.

Weight has always been a battle for me: I've been underweight, I've been overweight and I've been fit and muscly, but one thing is for sure I am in love with food. I have been on fad-diets and calorie restricted diets and it only ends in misery for me because I can't eat the food that I want to eat.
I go through phases of going to the gym and doing my physiotherapy and phases where I spend 99% of my day sat on my bum. The most important thing is finding something that works for you and something you enjoy doing. I don't weigh myself, I don't take any kind of measurement of my body, I purely assess my body on how my clothes are fitting and how I feel in myself.

Exercise
I absolutely love running but can't do it because I have weak knees so I had to find something else that works for me. I go to Fitness First where they do Les Mills classes which I really enjoy and they have such a wide range of classes. A lot of gyms are now incorporating Les Mills or other similar classes into their timetables. Some of my favourites are:
  • BodyPump - 'light to moderate weights with lots of repetition, giving you a total body workout'. It involves lots of reps of things like squats, chest presses and deadlifts. Classes normally run for an hour and you hit every part of your body - legs, chest, back, triceps, biceps, lunges, shoulders and core. This is probably my favourite class out of all the ones I do.
  • RPM - I'm sure everyone knows what spin/RPM is. It's an excellent cardio workout and amazing for burning calories. It really targets your legs and bum, the areas I want to tone up and make more muscly. My love for spin is slightly saddistic.
  • BodyBalance - a mix of yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates and is really good for stretching out your body and building up strength based on bodyweight. I don't feel like this is a really intense work out but it's good for just chilling out if you've had a stressful!
I try and go to the gym as much as I can - some weeks that's 6 days a week and some it's only 2 but I do whatever I can fit in. If you can only exercise twice a week then do that, even that little bit will help. If I'm really not in the mood to go, I try to remind myself that 1. I'm paying for my gym membership so I should probably make the most of it and 2. my mood will be a million times better after going to the gym.
If you can't go to the gym - swim, walk, run, anything that gets you moving!

Eating
Now, first things first food is the best thing ever, my life absolutely revolves around it. I spend every minute of my day thinking about what my next meal will be (don't act like you're not the same). I try to eat 'healthy' 80% of the time and then I know the majority of my meals are healthy. I find that the less you have sugar and 'bad' food, the less you crave it. If I've had a really bad day of food, I try to have a really good day of food the next day to counteract it. I don't ever feel guilty for eating something 'bad' or 'naughty', I know that I've earned eating it and one little thing isn't going to reverse all my progress.
Eating healthy at university can be difficult because vegetables and fruit are very expensive and there's no way I get my 5-a-day in, but I do the best I can and buy a lot of frozen vegetables as they're cheaper. I perform best at the gym when I'm eating good, nutritious food and find my workouts really suffer if I've been eating badly.
Don't cut whole food groups out. I have seen 2 of my friends make themselves lactose intolerant by cutting out dairy completely. If you're going on a vegan bender then fine - but before you cut lactose out consider if you'll want to eat it again. Can you really go without cheese and ice cream?!
I have soy milk but still eat normal cheese and have normal milk when I go to Starbucks etc so my body keeps processing lactose. I have however, made myself intolerant to white bread by completely cutting it out. I now try to eat a balance of white and brown pasta because becoming intolerant to white pasta would just be heartbreaking. Carbs, protein and fat are essential for your body to keep functioning. Cutting one of these groups out is not a healthy way to loose weight and it's not really that healthy.

Long Distance Relationships

When you're at university, long distance relationships seem to be a really common thing. Everybody tells you how difficult it is to make long distance relationships work and I don't disagree at all, but there's definitely ways to make it easier on yourself.

1. If your hearts are both in it, it'll work

I'm now in my second long distance relationship, the first didn't work out but I have been with my boyfriend for 10 months and we're going from strength to strength. If you don't have faith in your relationship, trust in each other and confidence that it's going to work you'll find it difficult.

2. Trust each other
I know this is easier said than done but if you don't trust your boyfriend/girlfriend, your relationship is going to be 100 times more difficult. I have been with people I don't trust and it drove me insane. I know I can go on a night out and my boyfriend will trust me and vice versa. If you can't go out without your other half getting angry with you, you probably need to have a talk.

3. Plan when you're going to see each other
I find that knowing when I'm going to see my boyfriend makes waiting that little bit easier. It's still incredibly difficult but being able to count down the days makes it seem a bit quicker. I see my boyfriend every 2 or 3 weeks and we take it in turns - one time he comes to Bath and the next I go home.

4. See it as a test
This will most likely be the biggest test of your relationship - distance will either make you stronger or will tear you apart. Work to make the relationship as good as it can be and remember that every moment apart is going to make you stronger when you're together. When I haven't seen my boyfriend for a couple of weeks, the time that we get together is so precious and it breaks my heart when he leaves but we're stronger than we have ever been.

5. FaceTime/Skype
I go to sleep that little bit later than I should each night so I have an opportunity to FaceTime my boyfriend as we're both incredibly busy during the day. If you don't have a chance to speak during the day, this time in the evening is vital so you can catch up on your days.

6. Don't hide your feelings
If you're feeling down, anxious, scared - let them know. Don't hide your worries about the relationship and let them build up until you see each other and they explode. Even if it seems silly, if it's bugging you then say it.

7. Expect bumps in the road
Not every moment is going to be perfect. There'll still be arguments, times where you miss each other a painful amount and days where you don't get to talk much. You just need to work through these and see the light at the other end of the tunnel.

8. Stay Happy
If it's not making you happy - don't do it. Don't stay in a relationship that makes you more unhappy than it makes you happy.

One for the coffee addicts

I have to share these with the world, I feel like it's cheating to keep them a secret. As a student, I most definitely can't afford more than one coffee out a week which leaves me stuck with regular coffee... Until I was introduced to these. Nescafe have just made coffee time a million times better, at home Gingerbread Lattes!

I first tried these at my boyfriends house as his family are also addicts and have every variety of these going. The Gingerbread Lattes are a limited edition so I'm hoping they stay until the end of winter but don't think I'll be that lucky.

I thought these could be expensive but I got mine from Sainsbury's for £1.60 for 8 sachets which is a bargain compared to what it would cost you from Starbucks etc. You don't need any milk or anything extra, you literally pour hot water over the sachet and stir and you get a foamy coffee that will rival your favourite coffee shop.

Nescafe also do mochas, flavoured lattes and normal lattes and cappucinos. I definitely recommend getting down to the supermarket and trying them out. Previous limited editions included millionaires shortbread latte which was just beyond words! Keeping my eyes peeled for new ones.

Thank you!

This is just a quick post to say a massive thank you to all my subscribers, both old and new. On the 18th October I hit 100 Bloglovin' followers which is crazy to me! Thank you for reading my rambles and leaving lovely comments! Sorry for the quietness lately, I've had a bundle of uni work but a post will be up tomorrow! xx

New Flat!

After my year out of university (between second and final year), I have actually moved back to uni, something I really didn't think I'd do. I've moved in to a two bedroom flat with my best friend - I lived with 6 people for 2 years and it isn't something I want to repeat.

After spending the last 24 hours unpacking and making it look like home, I thought I'd show you a few little bits of my room and the house.

My bed is in between a double and a single.. Feel sorry for my boyfriend when he comes to stay.
Please ignore my filthy make up brushes.
I'm currently storing tea lights in my little jars but my plan is to put sweets in them.
So happy I have this fireplace!

The shelf in our kitchen - hot drink addicts
Well stocked fridge - student problems of always having tiny ones.
A big part of me feeling happy and comfortable at uni is making my house/flat homey, particularly my room. I'm sure as time goes on I will get more bits and bobs for my room but for now I'm pretty happy with it!

I really feel at home in this flat and I can't wait for this year!

September Birch Box

I literally can't get my head around the fact that it's September, this year has flown by. But, another month means another box and I was really excited for this months Birch Box with the theme Happy Days.

I was really impressed by the contents this month with 5 beauty products and 2 lifestyle products.

I absolutely love Benefit products so I'm really excited to try this eye cream. A full size pot is £25.50 for 14.2g (the sample is 3.0g). I'm not sure I'd pay that much for an eye cream unless it was really amazing so we'll see.

The Agave healing oil treatment really caught my eye, I love trying out new hair products but never seem to find one that I stick to. This is pretty pricey at £16 for 60ml (sample is 4ml) but I've read some really good reviews so hopefully it'll be impressive! It smells so good I can't even put it in words.

I'm going back to uni next week and one of the things I hate buying most is shower gel so I'm happy I got a shower gel to keep me going for a while! This one by Korres is a citrus scent and smells amazing, perfect for waking me up in the morning which I know I will need. The packaging does remind me of a test tube but... The smell makes up for it. I think any shower gel that's more expensive than Soap and Glory isn't worth it and this is £8 for 250ml... It better be good.

I've been after a nude lipstick/gloss for a while and the ModelCo one is the perfect pinky nude shade. It's got a doe foot applicator which I much prefer to brush applicators and glides on so smoothly. I'm in love with this and would definitely buy it at £15 for 4ml. Mine is in the shade Viva and there's 5 other shades available so definitely worth checking out. I have another of these lip glosses that I got in a magazine a while ago and they're an amazing formula.

The final beauty item was a Beauty Blender. I received one of these when I signed up so I wasn't too fussed about this but it's always good to have a back up. These blend my make up so well and it's become a staple in my make up routine. You also get a little soap in it which is really good for cleaning make up brushes. These are £26 which is quite expensive, but they're amazing quality.

The two lifestyle products were a picture clip which is so cute (mine says 'Happy Days') and I can't wait to put it in my room at uni. The other was a bag of dried mango by Urban Fruit which I have already eaten and had by product 2... That says it all! At £13.20 for 6 packs they're definitely a treat rather than an everyday thing though.
